The first print photo that appeared on paper was made on March 4, 1880 by Stephen H. Hogan, a photographer of the Daily Illustrated in New York, using screen printing. This photo is "Illegal Buildings in New York's Shantytowns" by Newton.
Previously, although there were "photos" on paper media, they were all pictures drawn by the artist by hand-engraved on a wooden board or carved on a zinc plate and printed in black and white based on the pictures on the photos. The hue cannot be expressed.
However, since the screen printing method was invented, it has not been widely used on paper media. Therefore, hand-engraved paper media "photos" still dominate. Until 1910, hand-carved plates were gradually abolished.
The push for screen printing was by Hungarian-American, iconic figure of the American mass media, Joseph Pulitzer. In 1889, Pulitzer bought a French building and built a new office building on the site of Le Monde, next to Hyde Park in Frank Street, New York.
Pulitzer was fully aware of the effect of illustrations on the sales of newspapers, and he began to increase the original column to four to five columns in a hurdle. At this time, the "Le Monde" became the first newspaper to print photos on a large number of screens, and its circulation quickly rose to hundreds of thousands.
By the late 1890s, screen printing was popularized and used every day, creating a new world of print news photos.
